Legazpi City, [10.10.17] – The personnel of Oas Municipal Police Station in coordination with Municipal Agriculture Service Office and Municipal Health Office has took possession of a 35 kilos of puffer dried fish from a local merchant today.
According to Police Chief Inspector Arthur Ramirez Gomez, Albay Police Provincial Office Public Information Officer, Police Chief Inspector Domingo Tapel, Jr, Acting Chief of Police of Oas has directed his personnel to impound the dried fish from an unnamed vendor at 8:30 o’ clock in the morning.
The sequestration of the dried fish is consonance with the implementation of the violation of Fisheries Administrative Order 249 series of 2014.
Fisheries Administrative Order 249 series of 2014 refers to the Banning on the sale and distribution of raw/fresh or processed puffer fish.

Last October 5, 2017 at 12:00 o’ clock noon time in Barangay Bulalacao, Presentacion, Camarines Sur four persons including two minors were hospitalized due to food poisoning after eating a puffer fish or locally known as “butete”/”tikong”.
Police report has identified the victims of food poisoning were Susan Narvato, 12 years old, Marilene Rosales, 5 years old, Marlen Rosales, 25 years old, Antonio Rosales, 28 years old and two other unnamed minors.
One of the victim had died at 6:30 in the evening of the same date while being treated at the Presentacion Rural Health Unit – while five others were brought to Bicol Medical Center in Naga City.
The patients suffered severe stomach aches and were all vomiting.
The RHU-Presentacion has declared that the patients ate their lunch with a viand made of a cooked “butete”/”tikong”.

Almost all pufferfish contain tetrodotoxin, a substance that makes them foul tasting and often lethal to fish. To humans, tetrodotoxin is deadly, up to 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide. There is enough toxin in one pufferfish to kill 30 adult humans, and there is no known antidote.
The majority of pufferfish species are toxic and some are among the most poisonous vertebrates in the world. In certain species, the internal organs, such as liver, and sometimes their skin, contain tetrodotoxin and are highly toxic to most animals when eaten; nevertheless, the meat of some species is considered a delicacy in the country.
Pursuant to Article 10 of Republic Act Number 7394 or the 1992 Consumer Act of the Philippines which provides for the banning or prohibition of the sale or distribution in the market of any injurious, unsafe and dangerous products which include but not limited to fishery goods or commodities.
The death by food poisoning in Barangay Bulalacao, Presentacion, Camarines Sur is the latest recorded incident in Bikol region caused by eating the poisonous puffer fish.
