Pio Duran, Albay, [06.28.11] – The Albay West Coast is finally included now included in the Central Philippine Nautical Highway and making this fishing town, the latest host of roll on-roll off port in the country adding to the lists of the gateway of Luzon island to Central Philippines.
The opening of the Port of Pio Duran was formally inaugurated by a maiden port call of two passenger ships from Santa Clara Shipping Lines and Montenegro Shipping Lines before the cheering crowd who witnessed the event.
The ceremony was graced by Albay Governor Joey Sarte Salceda, Congressman Fernando V. Gonzalez, 3rd District of Albay, Mayor Dante R. Arandia, Ms. Rosenda Sumagaysay of the Philippine Ports Authority, Engineer Macario M. Pavia, Chief of Albay Provincial Planning Office, Members of the Sangguniang Byan of Pio Duran and representatives of business sector and three shipping companies.
“This port was constructed with the coast of PhP60,399,941.69 million last September 15, 2009 and as completed on July 11, 2010. The 100 meters causeway is the only roro port constructed in Bicol Region and we are joining now the Port of Matnog, in Sorsogon,” Mayor Dante R. Arandia said during the interview.
“We will also try to look for the opportunity in promoting the tourism potential of Pio Duran and the rest of the region in connecting access in going to Boracay island and other tourism destination in the Visayas,” Arandia added.
On the same note, Albay Governor Joey Sarte Salceda also expounded the event as revolutionary, dramatic and historical initiative that will pave the economy of Bicol Region, particularly in the west coast of Albay.
According to Salceda, the port will create a market potential upon its implementation of the project as it isbased on the spatial integration as one of the principle of the Regional Development Council that will promote mutual inter-regional trading, given the geographical location of Pio Duran which is strategically situated in the West Philippine Sea.
The Governor further expounded about the Albay West Coast road and Donsol-Pio Duran road are major complimentary infrastructures create and boost an investment and trading climate, enough to propel economic growth within the Albay West Coast corridor.
The Port of Pio Duran is the latest additional projects implemented by the Philippine Ports Authority in Bicol that will provide regular trip to Masbate under the Central Philippine Nautical Highway.
That is why Mrs. Rosenda Sumagaysay of the Philippine Ports Authority also exhorted the people of Pio Duran, that the birth of the port is not the issue of the present but, how it will shape the life of the people in the future, that is why the port should be guarded against all elements as an individual responsibility of every people of Pio Duran.
