mediakillingLegazpi City, [03.14.17] – A provincial columnist in Masbate was killed by still unidentified suspects in Barangay Bacolod, Milagros, Masbate on Monday, while a former head of Kapisanan ng mga Broadkaster ng Pilipinas in Sorsogon City was also arrested in Sorsogon City on the same day for libel.

The victim was identified as Joaquin “Dos por Dos” Briones, Jr, a columnist of Remate Tabloid, alocal tabloid in the province.

According to the victim’s family member, Briones was waylaid by two unidentified suspects on board on two Honda XRM motorcycles.

Briones was also riding on his motorcycle when he was shot. He sustained five mortal gunshot wounds at his back and arm and died on the spot.

Meanwhile, Redentor Lasay was arrested at 9:35 in the morning by elements of Sorsogon Criminal Invstigation and Detection Group, Sorsogon City Police Station and 5th Regional Public Safety Battalion along Burgos Street in downtown Sorsogon City.

He was arrested by virtue of warrant of arrest issued by Sorsogon Regional Trial Court Executive Judge Refobar Gerona for two counts of libel. The bail recommended for his temporary liberty was set for ten thousand each count.

Lasay was found liable for two counts of libel together with two others  in a complaint filed by Casiguran town mayor Edwin Hamor.

The controversial media practitioner was the former publisher publisher of a local weekly newspaper.
